News Release: ERDMAN Wins Design-Build Institute Project of the Year Award for Janesville Medical Campus

Award criteria judged project’s effective use of integrated project delivery, unique solutions

MADISON, Wis. (Sept. 18, 2013)ERDMAN, a Madison-based national leader in healthcare consulting, facility planning, development and design-build, today announced that it has won the Design-Build Institute of America’s Project of the Year Award for the Great Lakes Region. Even though ERDMAN is solely focused on healthcare, the DBIA award is for the top project across all industry sectors.

ERDMAN was honored for its work on the Janesville Medical Campus: St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital and Dean Clinic-Janesville East in Janesville, Wis. The project successfully integrated a hospital and clinic into one comprehensive facility, while creating a flexible framework for future growth. The integrated campus includes a 50-bed hospital, master planned to grow to 200 beds, along with a 150,000 clinic planned to double in size. “We’re proud to be recognized by the DBIA for our leading integrated project delivery approach and the resulting success that our clients and ERDMAN achieved on this very innovative project,” said ERDMAN President and CEO Brian Happ. “By collaborating closely with our clients and partners, we created a real estate solution that allowed our clients to achieve their business objectives in the market they serve while also providing the opportunity to accommodate growth for years to come.”

To be eligible for the award, projects must have demonstrated successful application of design-build principles, including collaboration in the early stages of the project and the acceptance of single-entity risk. Winning projects are honored for their advanced and innovative application of total integrated project delivery and unique solutions to project challenges.

The design quality of the project, including aesthetics, functionality and lifecycle considerations, also was a key consideration.

“Together, we designed this campus from the patient perspective to provide them with an exceptional experience and promote healing,” said St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital President Kerry Swanson. “In care areas, we looked at physician and staff workflows to create efficient work areas so our caregivers can spend more one-on-one time with the patients. Throughout every step of the process, we asked ourselves, ‘What is best for the patient?’ We are proud of this approach.”

SSM Health Care of Wisconsin and Dean Health Systems collaborated with ERDMAN to build the $88.8 million medical campus. Totaling 315,000 square feet, the project includes a 165,000-square-foot hospital and an adjacent outpatient clinic.

“St. Mary’s Janesville Hospital and Dean Clinic share this new facility which has allowed us to provide more coordinated care to our patients and the greater Janesville community,” said Dean Clinic Interim President Allison Mooney. “We could not be happier with the medical campus and are grateful for the talented collaboration that resulted in this state-of-the art facility.”

A jury of industry experts, including owners, design-builders, architects and engineers evaluated project submissions primarily on successful achievement of the owner’s project goals and the implementation of design-build best practices. Judges placed special emphasis on the design team’s use of innovation to add value to the project, including the use of new systems, methods, technologies and processes that decrease cost and increase efficiency, speed and safety.

The award was given on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at the Golf Club of Indiana.
