Senior housing is replacing the NFL at the former site of Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium

Baltimore’s venerable Memorial Stadium, once home to the Baltimore Colts, Ravens and Orioles, among other pro sports teams, packed plenty of memories.

But when the Colts moved to Indianapolis in 1984, support grew for the idea of replacing the antiquated stadium with new facilities for the Orioles and Ravens. That happened in the 1990s, and Memorial Stadium was demolished in 2001-02.

But the stadium site continues to have an interesting “post season.” A public-private partnership has been gradually developing a senior living community on the site.

Govans Ecumencial Development Corp. (GEDCO), along with public and private investors, have pumped upwards of $80 million into a project called Stadium Place since being awarded the old Memorial Stadium site in 1999. So far, they have developed four high-rise independent living buildings totaling 340 units, 36 more are under construction, and another six to eight years of redevelopment lie ahead.

Meanwhile, it’s also quite possible that the ghosts of Orioles, Colts and Ravens past still roam the area. In 2010 a new recreational baseball and football field was dedicated, with home plate positioned exactly where it was in Memorial Stadium.
