Inpatient Projects: Finally, downscaled Shriners moving forward in St. Louis

ST. LOUIS – After years of setbacks, Shriners Hospital for Children in St. Louis has a date set for a groundbreaking for a new replacement hospital: March 20.

The $47 million replacement facility will be constructed at 4400 Clayton Ave. on the campus of the Washington University School of Medicine on the large campus of BJC Healthcare.

It will have just 90,000 square feet of space and 12 inpatient beds – a big reduction from Shriners’ original plans in 2009, when a $170 million facility with 40 beds was in the works.

However, Shriners officials say they are still excited about the new hospital project, which was put on hold for financial reasons in both 2009 and 2011.
