Inpatient Projects: Commercial spaces to pay for hospital

Like many aging hospitals throughout the country, century-old St. Anthony in Chicago has plans for a new replacement campus a short distance from its existing facility outside of downtown.

Yet, what St. Anthony Ministries, the holding company that owns the hospital, has planned is, perhaps, unlike any medical complex/planned community in the country, according to officials.

On an 11-acre lot at 31st Street and Kedzie Avenue, about four miles southwest of the Chicago Loop, St. Anthony and development partners are planning a $430 million, mixed-use campus with a new hospital, medical office space, retail, wellness, education, arts and recreational components to serve the surrounding community. It is being called the Focal Point community.
