CHILDREN’S NEW REBUILD AND RETROFIT PLAN IS STILL IN CONCEPTUAL STAGE

Since 2008, Children’s Hospital & Research Center Oakland has proposed two distinctly different construction plans to meet the state’s seismic safety guidelines for healthcare facilities.
The first was quite extensive and called for a $700 million rebuilding of the hospital with a 12-story patient tower. But when residents objected to what they called an “encroachment” on their neighborhood as well as the proposed height of the tower, local taxpayers turned down a ballot initiative.
