EVEN SO, LARGE CALIFORNIA SYSTEM LOOKS TO TRIM BUDGET BY $700 MILLION

Last year was a good one for Sacramento, Calif.-based Sutter Health. In fact, in 2010 Sutter’s profits increased more than 45 percent over the previous year, to $685 million from $471 million in 2009.
The healthcare system reported its financials last month.
Revenue was up 7 percent, to $9.1 billion from $8.5 billion. Health system officials say that a major factor in the turnaround was a rebound in Sutter’s investment income, which jumped to $124 million in 2010. In 2009 it was $11 million.
