A mid-year ground breaking is set for a new $20 million cancer institute on the campus of University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tenn.

The new facility would have at least 100,000 square feet of space, making it the largest, specialized cancer facility in the region, according to Cancer Institute Director John Bell. Some of the plans have yet to be finalized.

The cancer center would replace a facility in use since 2003. Officials say treatment demand at the UT cancer institute has doubled since that facility opened. Last year, the institute saw 2,000 more patients than the previous year, an 11 percent increase.
