Boston Med Center unveils $189M plan
245,000 SQUARE FOOT AMBULATORY CARE BUILDING SET FOR CITY’S SOUTH END
By John Mugford
With its outpatient services scattered in several buildings, Boston Medical Center announced plans to remedy the situation with a future $189 million, 245,000 square foot ambulatory care center. The facility is to be named the Carl J. and Ruth Shapiro Ambulatory Care Center, after the family foundation that recently donated $15 million to the project.
Boston Medical Center (BMC) officials say the new, nine-story building is needed to keep up with increasing demand for healthcare services, including outpatient services. The future ambulatory care center is part of a multi-phase, multi-year capital expansion that is expected to add about 500,000 square feet of new clinical space. Other projects are likely to include an expanded emergency and trauma center, and a new patient tower to increase in-patient bed capacity.
To help fund the effort, the 582-bed, not-for-profit BMC expects to launch a major capital campaign. The academic medical center is affiliated with the Boston University School of Medicine.
