NEWNAN, Ga. – Piedmont Newnan Hospital, about 30 miles southwest of Atlanta, recently received the go ahead from the state for its Certificate of Need (CON) application to build a replacement hospital. The Georgia Department of Community Health in recent weeks approved the $193.7 million proposed project, which would be built on 105 acres near U.S. Interstate 85. The nine-story, 362,400 square foot replacement hospital would have 136 beds. Construction is slated to begin in October and conclude in early 2011. The facility will replace the decades-old Newnan Hospital that Atlanta-based Piedmont Healthcare acquired in March of this year. In building the new hospital, Piedmont officials hope to dissuade residents of Coweta County from leaving the area for healthcare services. According to Piedmont officials, about 56 percent of Newnan residents leave the county for hospital care – with most of them heading to Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta.
