REPLACEMENT FACILITY SLATED FOR WASHINGTON UNIVERSITY MED CENTER CAMPUS
By John Mugford
Shriners Hospitals for Children, based in Tampa, Fla., recently approved funding to move forward on a $170 million, 247,000 square foot replacement hospital in St. Louis. The new hospital would be built on the campus of Washington University Medical Center, a 230-acre, 12 block campus that’s home to Washington University School of Medicine, Barnes-Jewish Hospital, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Barnard Hospital, Siteman Cancer Center, and the Central Institute for the Deaf.
The medical center is affiliated with St. Louis-based BJC Healthcare.
Shriners plans to locate the new 40-bed hospital on land it is acquiring from Washington University; the site is home to a former Pepsi Bottling Co. facility. In addition to the 40 beds, the new Shriners Hospital would have four surgical suites and 30 examination rooms.
After the new hospital is finished – officials hope to start construction in 2009 and complete the project by 2012 – Shriners hopes to sell the current hospital and its 15-acre site in the suburb of Frontenac.
