The $248 million, 700,000 square foot Clarian North Medical Center in Carmel, Ind., north of Indianapolis, is busy making the transition from construction heavyweight to medical powerhouse after opening for business in early December.

During its construction phase, the center – which includes a 459,000 square foot, 170-bed hospital, and a 176,000 square foot medical office building (MOB) along with 1,560 parking spaces – represented the largest building project in the community’s history.

According to the hospital, the massive-by-local-standards construction details included: 4,000 tons of structural steel, 22,000 cubic yards of concrete, 2 million square feet of drywall and 5,000 truckloads of dirt shaped into state-of-the-art healthcare facilities on a 60-acre site.

The economic details were also an impressive sight locally as the center is projected to generate 750 full-time jobs with an average salary of $56,433. Property taxes are projected to be at least $1.4 million a year.

The medical impact is expected to be weighty as well. Center officials expect to serve 10,500 patients in the first year of operation and estimate that about 2,500 births will occur at facility in its first year.
