PUBLIC HOSPITALS CAN PRESENT OPPORTUNITIES

One of the many heartwrenching tales to emerge from the wreckage of Hurricane Katrina was the destruction of Charity Hospital, refuge for the ill and poor and home of the city’s only Level 1 trauma center.
Officials have yet to determine how or where Charity will be rebuilt. But it likely will be rebuilt, because large cities depend on public hospitals, says Mark Wietecha, chairman of Kurt Salmon Associates and a healthcare consultant.
“Public hospitals cannot disappear altogether,” he says. “Politically, that is not going to be possible.”
Hospitals that depend on public dollars to pay some or all of their bills may not have the money for upscale expansions or brand-new buildings, but many of them are planning capital improvements.
