KILMARNOCK, Va. — October 22, 2026 — Bon Secours is moving forward with a $73.3 million modernization project at Bon Secours Rappahannock General Hospital (RGH), representing a significant investment in the future of local healthcare and the hospital’s role in serving the Northern Neck community.
The project reflects Bon Secours’ ongoing commitment to thoughtfully invest in healthcare resources that meet the needs of the communities it serves. Bon Secours continually evaluates the evolving healthcare needs of each community it serves across the Commonwealth and how best to deliver care in ways that support access to quality, compassionate care close to home. While the approach may look different in each community, Bon Secours remains committed to thoughtfully stewarding resources while meeting the unique healthcare needs of the people it serves.
The modernization builds on a multi-year campus expansion and renovation completed in 2025, made possible through Bon Secours’ investment and funds raised through the community’s generous support of the Campaign for Rappahannock General Hospital. This next phase will continue that progress, addressing aging infrastructure and modernizing key patient care areas to support patient safety, improve functionality and enhance the care environment for patients, families and caregivers.
“For nearly 50 years, Rappahannock General Hospital has been here for the Northern Neck, caring for our neighbors and serving as an important healthcare resource for this community,” said Bessie Brown, vice president of nursing and hospital administrator for Bon Secours Rappahannock General Hospital. “This investment reflects our commitment to ensuring RGH can continue to serve the community for years to come. We’re proud to build on that legacy and grateful for our partnership with the community, whose generosity, support and engagement have helped shape the hospital’s history and its future.”
The project will focus primarily on modernizing existing hospital spaces, complemented by targeted new construction. Plans include approximately 25,264 square feet of renovations and 18,898 square feet of new construction. Planned improvements will include modernized patient rooms and care environments, updates to key clinical and support areas, more functional layouts, improved patient flow and essential infrastructure upgrades. Together, these improvements are intended to support a safer, more functional environment for patients and caregivers while helping the hospital continue delivering care to the community.
Funding for the project will include a significant investment from Bon Secours Mercy Health, alongside community support through a new fundraising campaign led by the Bon Secours Richmond Health Care Foundation in recognition of Rappahannock General Hospital’s 50th anniversary in 2027. The effort builds on a longstanding tradition of community generosity that has helped fund improvements across the hospital campus.
Construction is anticipated to begin in summer 2027. Work is expected to be phased to minimize disruption and maintain hospital operations throughout construction. Additional project details will be shared as planning progresses.
