News Release: Huntsville Hospital Health System Breaks Ground On New North Huntsville Emergency Department

Facility will bring 24/7 emergency care closer to residents and families

Huntsville Hospital Health System (HH Health) has broken ground on a new freestanding emergency department that will bring 24/7 emergency care closer to home, marking the largest healthcare investment ever made in North Huntsville.

HH Health leaders and community officials gathered Wednesday to celebrate the start of construction on the North Huntsville Freestanding Emergency Department at 10121 Memorial Parkway NW, near Bob Wade Lane and the Northern Bypass. The $30 million project will serve North Huntsville and surrounding communities, including the growing Winchester Road corridor and Hazel Green.

“Our responsibility is to make sure people have access to the care they need, when and where they need it,” said Tracy Doughty, executive vice president of Madison County operations for HH Health. “North Huntsville is growing, and this is an important step in making sure emergency services keep pace with the community. We’re bringing the resources and expertise of Huntsville Hospital closer to the families who depend on us.”

The new facility will include an emergency department staffed by board-certified physicians, advanced diagnostic imaging with CT and ultrasound technology, and laboratory services. The site will also feature a helipad. Patients who require hospitalization or more specialized care can be transferred to an appropriate hospital for continued treatment.

The facility will provide another access point for emergency treatment across Madison County while helping manage demand at existing hospital emergency departments, including Huntsville Hospital’s Level I Trauma Center.

“North Huntsville is an important part of our city, and investments like this help ensure residents have the services they need as our community grows,” said Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle. “Having emergency care close to home gives families peace of mind and makes our neighborhoods stronger. We’re grateful to Huntsville Hospital for its continued commitment to the people who live, work and learn in North Huntsville.”

The project builds on HH Health’s recent investment in Physician Care North Huntsville, a primary care clinic that opened in June near Alabama A&M University. Together, these facilities will expand access to both primary and emergency care in an area that has historically had fewer convenient healthcare options.

The North Huntsville project is part of a broader HH Health effort to expand emergency care access across Madison County. It builds on the success of Crestwood Medical Center’s freestanding emergency department in Harvest, which opened in 2024. HH Health will also break ground on a new facility in Hampton Cove on Wednesday, Nov. 4, with another future location planned for Madison. Together, these investments will provide more options for emergency care across the county, supported by the hospitals and advanced services of HH Health.

Construction of the North Huntsville Freestanding Emergency Department is expected to be completed in December 2027.
