When one ponders the phrase, “Cancer doesn’t discriminate,” most may think of it in terms of members of the human race, in that any of us could be its unlucky victims. But it’s also important to remember that cancer doesn’t generally discriminate by geographic location, either. Whether one lives in a booming metropolis or in the most remote hinterland, cancer strikes everywhere. But for patients in rural locations, the ravages of the disease are often compounded by the long and arduous journeys that they and their loved ones must make to access quality care.
Officials of Astera Health and CentraCare, two Central Minnesota health systems with a long-standing partnership, had been discussing a solution to this very dilemma for quite some time regarding oncology patients in Wadena, a “charming village” of about 4,300 situated in Otter Tail and Wadena Counties, about 160 miles northwest of Minneapolis-St. Paul.
