June 15, 2026 – El Camino Health today submitted an application to the Town of Los Gatos for approval to rebuild its El Camino Health Los Gatos Hospital, replacing the existing facility with a technologically advanced, purpose-built acute care campus. The new hospital will include 122 single occupancy patient rooms, 12 operating rooms, a modernized and larger emergency department and advanced maternity, cardiac and oncology diagnostics and services.

“This is an important milestone in our commitment to meet the expanding healthcare needs of Los Gatos, Campbell and surrounding communities,” said Dan Woods, chief executive officer of El Camino Health. “Healing environments should feel human, connected and welcoming, while delivering the most advanced care for patients. They should also provide an unparalleled working environment for our physicians, nurses and staff. Our goal is to build the hospital this community deserves, and we will.”
The proposed 340,000 square-foot campus, located next to the existing hospital, will be the first all-electric hospital in Los Gatos, which will dramatically reduce the entire Town’s carbon emission levels. It is designed to meet the most current California seismic mandates and will be equipped with the latest medical technologies. At the same time, the new hospital will reflect the scale and character of Los Gatos, target LEED Gold certification, and include a healing garden and water-saving landscaping.

El Camino Health acquired the former Community Hospital of Los Gatos in 2009 and has since invested more than $300 million in renovations and clinical services, along with $1.4 million in community grants to improve the health of Los Gatos residents. “El Camino Health is helping us build a healthier, more compassionate future for our students,” said Paul Johnson, Los Gatos Union School District superintendent. “Their Community Benefit grant funding supports our district’s behavioral health program, which provides mental health counseling, social emotional learning lessons and a wellness center across our four elementary schools and middle school. It is an impact that our families feel every day. Their hospital rebuild will renew El Camino Health’s anchor role in our community.”
While these investments have preserved continuity of care, the existing hospital, which opened in 1962, does not meet state-mandated seismic standards, nor fully support the advanced and emerging medical technologies that benefit patients and physicians alike.
“This rebuild represents the next chapter of El Camino Health’s commitment to combining personal, community-focused medicine with clinical innovations and medical excellence,” said Alan Muster, MD, president of El Camino Health Medical Network. “We’ve been pioneers in the development of electronic health records, minimally invasive procedures, robotic surgeries and digital health, while never losing sight of the human side of medicine. That focus will continue as we work with the community and begin this rebuild.”

The total cost of the rebuild project is estimated at more than $1 billion, with a projected completion and opening in 2032.
El Camino Health is pursuing an ambitious expansion strategy aimed at bringing advanced care closer to more people, including new ambulatory locations, investments in modern facilities and a network of primary and specialty care offices.
“This is a region that thrives on innovation, and that has inspired us to reimagine how healthcare is delivered,” Woods said. “We are bringing care closer to more people, in more places and the new Los Gatos hospital continues to put that vision into action.”
During construction, the existing hospital will continue to provide patients with care and services without interruption. For more information on the Los Gatos Hospital rebuild, visit: www.elcaminohealth.org/losgatoshospitalrebuild.
