BOMA ‘reverse’ panel let providers ask questions of building owners

Many healthcare real estate (HRE) conferences include panel discussions comprising real estate executives from prominent health systems.

The idea is to allow the panelists to share their real estate strategies and, perhaps, explain what difficulties they face in trying to carry out those strategies. They often field questions from eager audience members, many of whom are often professionals with third-party HRE firms looking to gain their business.

At this year’s BOMA International Medical Real Estate Conference at the Orlando Hilton Convention Center May 13-15, an audience of healthcare providers had a chance to turn the tables on a group of HRE professionals.

In this case, a panel of four professionals from HRE firms with large holdings of medical outpatient buildings (MOBs) were on stage to let health system real estate executives in on their strategies and to answer any questions they might have.

The session, moderated by Dan Minning, executive VP, property management & leasing for Lillibridge Healthcare Services, was titled, “Reverse Provider Panel: Ask Me Anything!”

As one would imagine, system executives in the audience were eager to ask questions about rental rates for MOB space, as, for the most part, they have been rising during the current environment of increased interest rates, construction costs and inflation in general.

One audience member, noting that capitalization rates (the rates of return on real estate investments) have declined, asked the panelists:
