WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – Geisinger officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Thursday, March 21, to commemorate the completion of the Medical Office Building at Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center.
The five-floor outpatient specialty facility, scheduled to open for patient care on March 25, encompasses more than 165,000 square feet and will house lab, radiology and retail pharmacy services along with general surgery, vascular surgery, pulmonary medicine, infectious diseases, adult and pediatric neurology, neurosurgery, neurophysiology, otolaryngology (ear, nose and throat), audiology, gastroenterology, nephrology and transplant surgery outreach practices.
As the 65 and older population continues to grow in Luzerne County and northeastern Pennsylvania, demand for these services continues to increase, and the medical office building allows for program growth with 175 exam rooms and seven procedure and treatment rooms.
“We’re caring for more members of our community than ever before and expanding to meet their needs is one of the ways we honor the trust they put in us every day,” said Mike DiMare, interim associate vice president of clinical operations for Geisinger Wyoming Valley Medical Center and Geisinger South Wilkes-Barre. “Our new medical office building makes better health easier by offering our patients everything they need under one roof, so they can see a specialist and schedule lab, diagnostic imaging or a pharmacy visit in the same trip.”
As programs mature, Geisinger expects to hire 70 new employees, including 20 providers, and offer approximately 70,000 new specialty appointments each year.
The services housed in the medical office building have surgical or inpatient components, so anyone needing complementary services will be close to Geisinger Wyoming Valley’s main hospital building where that acute care is provided.
The facility was designed to create a convenient and coordinated experience for patients, families and staff. Self-service check-in allows patients to get out of the waiting room and into exam rooms more quickly, a dedicated parking garage provides covered entry, and indoor, outdoor and rooftop respite areas offer places to relax. Large, two-door exam rooms connect to separate corridors for patient and provider traffic, giving patients more privacy and clinicians more space to collaborate on care plans.
The medical office building also features purpose-built spaces for education and community engagement. A large fourth-floor conference room and a classroom support the many graduate medical students who train in Geisinger residency and fellowship programs, and several touchdown areas allow them to meet with faculty. A reception area with a warming pantry is an ideal space for wellness education and other community events.
