Coming out of the COVID-19 pandemic has been difficult for health systems and providers of all types, with growth taking a back seat to survival.

“If you look back at the 2020 to 2022 timeframe, it was kind of slow for us on the de novo (development) front, because it was kind of hard to convince our physician and physician group partners … because they were trying to figure out what their practice patterns really looked like,” said Chuck Harbison, VP of business development with National Cardiovascular Partners (NCP).

Houston-based NCP partners with providers in the nationwide development, management and operation of outpatient, hybrid cardiovascular centers that contain ambulatory surgery centers (ASCs) and laboratories. NCP it is a division of Fresenius Medical Care North America (FMCNA), which is part of Fresenius Medical Care AG & Co. KGaA (NYSE: FMS), a German healthcare company which provides kidney dialysis services

“For a couple of years there, it was really hard to convince physicians … invest $6 million to build a new center,” he added. “They were wondering, ‘How do we grow? How do we use a surgery center to grow our practice?’
