Via Christi Clinic will be expanding its long-time presence in Derby, Kansas, once construction of the nearly 15,000-square-foot facility on the northwest corner of Tall Tree Road and Newberry Street, is complete this fall.
Located just off of a rapidly developing section of Rock Road, the new clinic will integrate primary care and physical therapy and allow Via Christi Clinic to go from four family medicine and pediatric providers to eight.
“It also will provide space for some of our other physician specialists to come to Derby to see patients on a regular basis, just like our OB/GYNs have been doing for the past several years,” said Philip Newlin, MD, interim chief medical officer for Via Christi Clinic.
Mike Mullins, Via Christi Health’s chief executive officer, said the expansion in Derby is part of a larger initiative to create a network of providers committed to helping improve the quality and coordination of care, while helping lower overall healthcare costs.
“Our goal is to continue to help ‘connect the dots’ to their care, making it simpler for patients and their families to access the right care at the right time in a location as close to home as possible,” said Mullins.
Pediatrician Camilo Palacio, MD, who has cared for patients since the clinic’s current location on 1720 Osage Road opened 19 years ago, is excited about what the new space will mean for his patients.
“We’re now caring for the children of people I cared for as children themselves,” said Palacio, whose patients, while primarily living in Derby and the surrounding communities, come from as far south as the Oklahoma border.
Kim Yearout, director of Via Christi’s Therapy Centers in Wichita, said her team is also excited about the new facility.
“Coming together under the same roof will allow us to better coordinate care and provide further opportunities for collaboration and consultation,” Yearout said. “For patients, this means greater continuity in the care they receive.”
MedCraft Healthcare Real Estate, LLC, is the developer-owner for the $5 million build-to-suit facility, for which Via Christi has signed a long-term lease. The clinic’s 2.1-acre site offers room for future expansion should it be needed.
“Our focus has been to help Via Christi elevate and expand the exceptional care that the physicians and clinical team already provide in Derby,” said Eric Carmichael, MedCraft principal. “We don’t just view this as another project, but as an opportunity to make healthcare services more accessible and affordable for Derby and the surrounding area.”
Eby Construction is the contractor for the project, and Howard and Helmer is the architect.
