News Release: HDR Expands Health Practice in Mid-Atlantic Region with Addition of Richmond Team

Richmond, VA – As part of HDR’s commitment to expanding its architecture practice throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, the Arlington, Virginia architecture office has expanded its presence with a new team of healthcare design experts in Richmond, Virginia.

The leadership team is made up by Sandy Shield Tkacz, Healthcare Principal; Bill Portes, Senior Project Manager; and Dennis Cummings, Senior Project Architect.

“Our team is committed to expanding HDR’s presence in the Richmond area to bring design excellence, attentive, senior leadership and the innovative solutions for which HDR is well known,” says Sandy Shield Tkacz. “We believe strongly that HDR is the global leader in healthcare design and look forward to opportunities that will demonstrate our value locally in Richmond.”

The trio boasts decades of experience leading projects and working closely with clients in the Mid-Atlantic region and surrounding areas.

Sandra Shield Tkacz, AIA, ACHA, EDAC, NCARB, a proud Richmond native with deep roots in the community, will spearhead growth of the health practice in Central Virginia and surrounding regions. Most recently, Sandy led HDR’s health architecture practice on the West Coast. She has an extensive portfolio of broad project experience with academic medical centers, community hospitals, children’s hospitals, ambulatory facilities and educational facilities.

“Sandy brings her depth of healthcare expertise to a region where she already has personal ties, which contributes to our local health leadership and supports HDR’s strategic direction for this region,” says Chris Bormann, East Region Health Director at HDR.

Bill Portes, AIA, a well-respected architect with over two decades of experience has joined the architecture team in Richmond as senior project manager. Bill has significant experience leading, managing and planning all aspects of complex projects. He is fluent in health codes and regulations and is a very hands-on leader, working diligently with clients to achieve successful outcomes.

Dennis Cummings, AIA, joins the Richmond team as a senior project architect with over 25 years of experience. He brings a wealth of knowledge in healthcare design with skills ranging from programming, planning, design and building construction. Dennis is committed to leading multidiscipline teams and working closely with clients to bring their visions to life.
