SARASOTA, Fla. (Dec. 2, 2016)  – Sarasota Memorial is moving ahead with plans to establish a new 110-bed hospital on Laurel Road in south Sarasota County.

Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration approved the health system’s Certificate of Need (CON) application today.

“We look forward to moving ahead with our plans to build a new facility that will enhance residents’ access to our high-quality programs and services, particularly for mothers seeking maternity care and elderly patients now having to travel the busy, congested roads to SMH,” said Sarasota Memorial CEO David Verinder. “The new campus will have the clinical and infrastructure support of the entire health system.”The Laurel Road hospital extends Sarasota Memorial’s scope of services and ability to provide a full continuum of care to residents of the entire county. The new facility will include 90 licensed acute care beds (80 medical/surgical beds and 10 obstetric beds), as well as a 20-bed observation unit and 25-room Emergency Care Center. It will offer interventional and surgical services, cardiac catheterization, endoscopy, respiratory care, infusion and chemotherapy services, rehabilitation, radiology/imaging, laboratory and pharmacy services, among many other clinical services. The site also will include a complement of outpatient pre- and post-acute care programs.

The planning and construction process will take about three years. Meanwhile, Verinder said, Sarasota Memorial remains committed to investing in medical services in North Port and continuing to attract physicians to the area, with the goal of opening a hospital there as well.

“We believe that the establishment of the Laurel Road facility will greatly help in the recruitment of medical staff throughout south county,” he said. “Our vision is to establish hospitals in key locations, first on Laurel Road and then in North Port, to bring convenient acute care to these growing communities.”
