In Frederick County, Md., one hospital dominates the marketplace. In fact, the 309-bed Frederick Memorial Hospital, just north of the city of Frederick’s downtown, is the only hospital in the county as well as the only acute care facility within a 25-mile radius. As a result, the hospital has a 74 percent market share in its primary service area, which is about 45 miles northwest of Washington, D.C., and 50 miles or so west of Baltimore.
