(Philadelphia) – The PennFIRST team has been selected to design and plan a New Patient Pavilion for the University of Pennsylvania Health System (Penn Medicine). The PennFIRST team is comprised of the global healthcare design expertise of HDR, the international design talent of Foster+Partners, and the innovative engineering design capabilities of BR+A, combined with the construction management expertise of L.F. Driscoll and Balfour Beatty.
Penn Medicine’s newest facility will be delivered through an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) process. IPD is a highly collaborative approach that achieves better outcomes and reduces waste throughout the design and construction phases. All of the PennFIRST team members join Penn Medicine in one shared contractual agreement that encourages multidisciplinary collaboration, promotes team problem solving and innovative thinking. Penn Medicine’s project will be one of the nation’s largest IPD healthcare projects. Together Penn Medicine and PennFIRST staff will work together in a shared “integration space” in Philadelphia to explore new ideas in design, construction and healthcare delivery all geared toward optimizing the patient experience and generating positive patient outcomes.
“This project marks a historic opportunity for Penn Medicine to set a new benchmark for care delivery,” noted Kevin Mahoney, Executive Vice President. “We are creating an innovative hospital facility that will share synergies with and support Penn’s world-renowned researchers, clinicians, and faculty. To design and deliver this new facility, we have assembled a talented team of experts who will work collaboratively to find and develop the most innovative facility solutions for improved healthcare delivery for generations to come.”
While still subject to internal governance approvals, the New Patient Pavilion is expected to be home to several hundred new private patient rooms, a comprehensive interventional and surgical platform, a new Emergency Department and related support services to be built on the site currently occupied by Penn Tower and its parking garage. Occupying a highly visible urban space on the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania (HUP) campus, the New Patient Pavilion will link HUP with the Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine.
