By Connie M. McCaffrey

The planned $400 million, 521,000 square foot addition to the University of Florida (UF) Shands Cardiovascular Neuroscience Hospital in Gainesville, Fla., took a big step toward reality recently. Skanska USA Building announced April 7 that it has signed a contract for $225 million to implement pre-construction services for the project.

The UF Shands Cardiovascular Neuroscience Hospital addition is slated to include 20 operating rooms (ORs) and 216 beds, split evenly between cardiovascular and neuroscience. The expansion will allow for continued growth of the UF Health Children’s Hospital and also open up more space for other departments in the North Tower of UF Health Shands Hospital.
