Inpatient Projects: At last, a hospital in St. Bernard Parish

FIVE YEARS AFTER HURRICANE KATRINA, A $69.1 MILLION FACILITY IS UNDER WAY

The future St. Bernard Parish Hospital is slated for a site in Chalmette, La., just south of New Orleans. It will be the parish’s first hospital since Hurricane Katrina destroyed all four of its hospitals in late 2005.

When Hurricane Katrina struck the New Orleans metropolitan area in 2005, it destroyed virtually every notable structure – including all four hospitals – in St. Bernard Parish, just south of the city. In the aftermath of the destruction, there was a widespread call to rebuild the parish’s facilities, including the hospitals.

However, for five years, those four hospitals have remained unrepaired and shuttered. In the meantime, parish residents have received their healthcare services at a “temporary” health center housed in double-wide trailers.
