As noted in the preceding article, “Is the (third) party over?”, a panel of industry experts recently discussed whether third-party development and ownership hospitals and health systems might be on the wane.

But another hot topic arose during that discussion: What will be the dominant business model for healthcare real estate development in future years? Will it be developers that are divisions of large, publicly trade healthcare real estate investment trusts (REITs), or smaller, privately owned firms?
