By John Mugford

Toledo-based Health Care REIT Inc. was recently named as the master developer on one of the largest development opportunities in Nassau County, N.Y. The REIT landed the contract to spearhead the development of East Meadow, N.Y.-based Nassau Health Care Corp.’s proposed $1 billion redevelopment of two properties on Long Island.

John Thomas, EVP-Medical Facilities for Health Care REIT Inc. (NYSE: HCN), says, “We look forward to helping (Nassau Health Care Corp.) advance their mission through a strategic planning effort to optimize the use of their campuses by integrating the full spectrum of inpatient, outpatient and post-acute care facilities. We also look forward, upon approval, to leading the development and financing of these healthcare facilities for the Nassau community.”

One part of the proposal entails converting 50 acres at Nassau Health Care’s 63-acre A. Holly Patterson Extended Care Center campus in Uniondale into a new senior living complex. The future Senior Village at Patterson would include a 320-bed nursing home, a 150-bed assisted living facility, a community health center, a 29-station dialysis center, 388 units of senior independent and congregate housing, 100,000 square feet of retail and office space, a community center and athletic field, and about 4 acres of open space.
