Carolinas system submits $264.4M CON

504,090 SQUARE FOOT PROJECT WOULD INCLUDE A NEW EIGHT-STORY PATIENT TOWER

By John Mugford

Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast in Concord has submitted a Certificate of Need (CON) with the state of North Carolina for a $264.4 million expansion project. CMC-NorthEast, which is part of Charlotte-based Carolinas HealthCare System, would add 424,950 square feet of new space and renovated about 79,000 square feet of existing space.

The expansion, if approved, would entail two phases: The addition of a second floor on top of the current surgery center; and the building of an eight-story patient tower that would be home to cardiac, maternity, oncology, interventional radiology and nuclear medicine, kidney, and general medical and surgical beds.

A decision from the state is expected in February. If all goes according to plan, the second floor of the surgery center would open in January 2011 while the new patient tower would open in mid-2013.
