Medical developer sees synergies in labs

HAMMES CO. DRIVES DEVELOPMENT OF $140 MILLION, 305,000 S.F. RESEARCH FACILITY

Two major Wisconsin research institutions now share a new laboratory facility thanks to a Wisconsin developer better known for hospitals and medical office buildings.

The pairing began when the state’s largest private research institution, the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) initiated the development of a new lab facility on its campus west of Milwaukee in 2004. The expansion was prompted by a need to update, consolidate and increase research space – particularly animal space.

At the same time, Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin was planning to build a research facility of its own, plus a vivarium, for a new Children’s Research Institute. Instead, Children’s partnered with MCW on what became a $140 million, five-story, 305,000 square foot facility on the Milwaukee Regional Medical Campus in Wauwatosa, Wis. The lower two levels of the building comprise a 100,000 square foot vivarium.
