A 19th century vision of humane care for the mentally ill will continue into the new millennium, thanks to an expansion and renovation of the 114-year-old Sheppard and Enoch Pratt Hospital in Towson, Md.

The $92 million, five-story hospital is located next to the stately brick building that housed Sheppard Pratt for more than a century. Extensive renovations to the original complex were included in the project.

“Our original building was maintained in pristine condition,” says Bonnie Katz, vice president of corporate business development for Sheppard Pratt. “But it was not functional for the kind of services we provide.”
