FATE STILL FOGGY FOR GULF COAST MED FACILITIES

Hurricane Katrina struck more than a month ago. Yet, the future of many affected healthcare facilities – and the implications for the Gulf Coast medical real estate market – remain difficult to forecast.

The massive hurricane’s eye made landfall near New Orleans on Aug. 29. Its powerful storm surge soon breached the levee system that had protected the city from Lake Pontchartrain, unleashing flooding that swamped much of the area.

As the disaster unfolded, the real estate consequences were low on the priority list – and rightfully so. Hospitals and healthcare facilities in devastated New Orleans were more focused on evacuating patients and staff.
