Art and poetry intertwine with medicine and surgery in a new healthcare complex developed by Sutter Health, the northern California-based healthcare powerhouse.

This mix of the arts and healthcare is taking place on the Sutter Fairfield Medical Campus in Fairfield, Calif., halfway between San Francisco and Sutter’s headquarters in Sacramento.

The facility incorporates a variety of visual arts as a way to calm and soothe patients. The ceilings in the pre-operation rooms are backlit with natural landscapes and a trompe l’oeil depicting birds in flight is located above the open MRI. Curtains around the patient beds are
