MORE STUDY KEEPS SPECIALTY HOSPITALS ON HOLD

Technically, the 18-month moratorium on new physician-owned specialty hospitals ended June 8. In effect, however, the ban has been extended to January 2006 while the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) reviews possible changes in Medicare reimbursement rates.

CMS plans to reform Medicare payments that might provide specialty hospitals with “an unfair advantage over other types of providers,” according to a statement from the federal agency.
