On April 25, 2005, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) proposed a policy change relating to the designation of critical access hospitals (CAHs) as necessary providers.

The rule: CMS Hospital Inpatient Prospective Payment System (IPPS) proposed Rule (FY 2006) prohibits any CAH operating with a Necessary Provider Designation from relocating its hospital and maintaining its CAH status unless the move is completed by Jan. 1, 2006, or grandfathered.
