“Vida is a game changer for the South Side, just like Texas A&M-San Antonio, Toyota and Palo Alto College before us. We are going to change the narrative on the South Side. But that is just the beginning of our plans for bringing health care and economic change for thousands of South Side residents,” said University Health President and CEO Ed Banos.

Comprehensive health and wellness services

University Health Vida will offer urgent care seven days per week, filling a critical gap in health care access. Additional services include:

  • Primary, pediatric and specialty care
  • Pharmacy
  • Lab and imaging services
  • Behavioral health services for adults and adolescents

“Under one roof, patients here can receive care, medications and many types of diagnostic tests. They can also see behavioral health professionals and access public health programs and community resources,” said Bexar County Hospital District Board of Managers Chair Jimmy Hasslocher. “This integration reflects our commitment to treating the whole person — not just a condition, not just a visit, but a life.”

Addressing nonmedical drivers of health

University Health’s Institute for Public Health will be based at Vida and feature “Community Commons,” which will bring together nonprofits to provide services that will help address the nonmedical needs of the community. Food insecurity, financial literacy and mental health services will be available.

“The Institute for Public Health is a crucial access point to services that go beyond clinical care. We are addressing barriers that impact health by facilitating collaboration among various organizations to provide long-term and sustainable solutions for the community,” said Vice President, President University Health Institute for Public Health, Carol Huber, DrPH.

A beautiful space for healing

Vida is uniquely designed to bring healing and wellness to the community from its convenient location to its state-of-the-art technology to its intentional decor. Studies show that artwork in health care settings contributes to faster healing with less medication. University Health’s award-winning SaludArte: Art of Healing program chose artwork for Vida that incorporates the natural landscape and colors of South Texas into their designs.

A focal point is the impressive three-story mosaic mural created with tiles that adorn the outside of the building, by the native South Side San Antonio artist Louis Vega Treviño. The vibrant colors and geometric patterns represent the area’s landscape and rich cultural history in San Antonio.

The future of health care access

University Health Vida represents more than a new building; it is a long-term investment in the health, dignity and well-being of San Antonio’s South Side. By bringing comprehensive medical care, behavioral health services and community-based resources together in one welcoming space, University Health is closing gaps in access and reimagining what health care can look like in historically underserved communities. Vida stands as a promise kept: high-quality, compassionate care close to home, today and for generations to come.
