News Release: Beebe HealthcareBreaksGround for New Medical Office on the Abessinio Health Campus

A new medical office is coming to the Abessinio Health Campus on Route 24 as Beebe Healthcare broke ground on the building Wednesday afternoon.

The three-story, 60,000-square-foot building will feature a surgery center on the second floor with four operating rooms in partnership with Lewes Surgery Center, which will be moving operations once the facility is ready.

“This groundbreaking represents Beebe’s commitment to meeting the needs of our growing community by expanding access to high-quality, patient-centered care,” said David A. Tam, MD, MBA, CPHE, FACHE, President & CEO, Beebe Healthcare. “By partnering strategically and investing in modern facilities, we are building the future of healthcare in Sussex County.”

The building further centralizes services on Beebe’s largest health campus off Route 24, which already features the Beebe Outpatient Surgery Center and Specialty Surgical Hospital, Tunnell Cancer Center, Center for Breast Health and numerous physician offices. Plans for additional community-focused services on the first and third floors are underway.

Currently located on Old Orchard Road, Lewes Surgery Center supports specialties including orthopaedics, ophthalmology, and plastic surgery since 2006.

“For nearly 20 years, Lewes Surgery Center and its clinicians have been dedicated providers in the healthcare community. I’m excited to see this next chapter of Lewes Surgery Center by expanding to help meet the needs of our growing population,” said Edward Jaoude, MD, Executive Director of Lewes Surgery Center and board-certified ophthalmologist. “We’re so grateful for this partnership with Beebe who continues to find innovative ways to bring more care to Sussex County.”

The medical building is expected to open early 2027.
