Leaders and Founders of CBRE’s U.S. Healthcare Capital Markets Facilitate $2.6 Billion in Medical Office Building Sales in 2017 Alone; $8 Billion Since Group Formation
CBRE announced today that Chris Bodnar and Lee Asher of its Healthcare Capital Markets Group have both been promoted to Vice Chairman–the highest title ranking among CBRE producers.
Mr. Bodnar and Mr. Asher serve as partners and co-leaders of the national practice dedicated to providing healthcare real estate investors with the acquisition, disposition and debt, and equity recapitalization strategies across the continuum of care. This includes medical office buildings, specialized and general acute care, long-term acute care facilities, and other post-acute care operations.
“Our Healthcare Capital Markets Group, led by Chris and Lee, is one of the first within our industry to form a nationwide speciality practice focused on the healthcare investment sector. Today, thanks to Chris and Lee’s leadership, CBRE is the preeminent real estate advisor to the healthcare industry, completing more capital markets transactions than any other firm,” said Kevin Aussef, Chief Operating Officer, CBRE Capital Markets.
Since founding CBRE’s Healthcare Capital Markets Group 11 years ago, the practice has executed more than $8 billion worth of assignments, equating to over 40 million square feet of commercial assets. In 2017 alone, the group was responsible for the disposition of 140 medical facilities, totalling over 7.8 million square feet of healthcare real estate, with a value of $2.6 billion.
With Mr. Bodnar based in Denver and Mr. Asher in Atlanta, the partners oversee a team spanning the U.S. Recent significant transactions include:
- In December 2017, the group facilitated the $367.7 million sale of an IRET-owned medical office portfolio to Harrison Street Real Estate Capital, LLC. The portfolio included 25 properties located across five states.
- The team has also been recognized for its role in executing the largest health system real estate monetization on record. This consisted of 4.3 million square feet of medical office assets totalling over $1 billion in value on behalf of Catholic Health Initiatives. The assignment spanned 14 states and closed in several phases in 2016 and 2017 to multiple buyers.
Mr. Bodnar, who founded the Healthcare Capital Markets Group in 2006 at the age of 24, is the second youngest in CBRE’s history to achieve the title of Vice Chairman. In 2012, he became the youngest member invited to join CBRE’s Global Capital Markets Leadership Committee. Most recently, Mr. Bodnar was named to Real Estate Forum’s 2017 National 50 Under 40, recognizing his outstanding leadership among his industry peers.
Prior to forming the Healthcare Capital Markets Group, Mr. Asher was a member of CBRE’s Institutional Group in Atlanta specializing in office properties and served as the Managing Director of the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions for CBRE’s Financial Consulting Group. Before joining CBRE, Mr. Asher was co-founder and COO of iTendant, Inc., a provider of the service request and maintenance software to commercial building owners and operators.
Both Mr. Bodnar and Mr. Asher are recognized among CBRE’s Colbert Coldwell Circle, representing the top 100 producers in the Americas. In 2013, Healthcare Real Estate Insights™ named the pair Healthcare Real Estate Executive of the Year.
