MILWAUKEE, Wis. and TAMPA, Fla., Nov. 9, 2017 – Hammes Company (hammesco.com), the nation’s leading healthcare developer, has broken ground on the University of South Florida’s (USF) Morsani College of Medicine and Heart Institute (MCOM + HI) located in Water Street Tampa, a downtown district in Tampa, Fla.

The project team will include Hammes Company as the project manager and HOK / Skanska as the Design Builder.

The 13-story, 395,000 square foot high-rise is rooted in Hammes Company’s collaborative Buildings for Life planning philosophy designed to meet the ever-changing needs of the healthcare industry. The HOK design supports access to care through an interdisciplinary, experience-based health, wellness and science research and higher learning service model.

About Buildings for Life:

Collaboration: Hammes Company is committed to developing environments where different disciplines such as physicians, researchers, and clinical business partners come together to provide better care for patients and greater learning for medical students. USF Health’s state-of-the-art facility will support clinical and translational research opportunities to advance public health, streamline patient treatment and bring together academic medicine, training and life science research to create a more collaborative and efficient wellness network that improves health outcomes.

Flexibility and Efficiency: USF’s MCOM + HI building accommodates current health care and research services with the flexibility to adapt as healthcare delivery, technology and research needs rapidly change in the future. Hammes Company has helped programs like USF Health’s MCOM + HI building transform into contemporary medical training environments that meet today’s standards and can rapidly adapt to changing educational and technological requirements for decades to come.

The Human Experience: Interdisciplinary medical research facilities like USF’s MCOM + HI are centered both on patient-user needs providing collaborative, easily accessible facilities that promote health and wellbeing and the training of healthcare providers of the future in that setting.

The facility is the first site and a key anchor in an amenity-rich, highly accessible $3 billion real estate development by Strategic Property Partners that will establish Tampa’s downtown district, named Water Street Tampa, as an innovative and vibrant community.

“USF Health Morsani College of Medicine and Heart Institute encapsulates the essence of Hammes’ Buildings for Life collaborative planning philosophy by putting the medical school and research facility under one roof to teach, learn and pioneer new discoveries for heart health,” said Chris Kay, president and chief operating officer of Hammes Company. “The new building will provide a contemporary medical environment that meets current standards and will have design flexibility to adapt quickly to changing medical best practices and research standards, modern educational requirements and technological enhancements.”

Slated for winter 2019 completion, USF Health Morsani College of Medicine and Heart Institute will position the Tampa Bay area as a national leader in healthcare innovation and is expected to attract top-tier faculty, researchers, physicians and biotechnology, biomedical and pharmaceutical firms to the region, which will have a positive economic impact on the community. According to the University of South Florida, admissions to the medical college have been increasingly competitive since the new location was announced, and the most recent average medical college admission test scores are among the top of all medical schools in the country.
