Award recognizes his leadership and pioneering efforts in investment and development of the highly successful healthcare real estate sector
WHITE PLAINS, N.Y., Aug. 6, 2014 – Jonathan L. “John” Winer, senior managing director and chief investment officer of Seavest Healthcare Properties LLC, was recently honored as a “pioneer” in the healthcare real estate industry with the first Outstanding Contribution Award by BOMA International. The award, which recognizes Mr. Winer’s leadership in helping the sector evolve from an alternative investment to a core real estate asset class, was presented at BOMA’s recent Medical Office Buildings and Healthcare Facilities Conference in Nashville, Tenn., by the conference’s co-chairs, Laca Wong-Hammond and Neil Carolan.
Mr. Winer’s involvement in healthcare real estate began in the mid-1990s, when he recognized the sector’s investment potential long before most of his peers. He became a leading advocate and evangelist of the asset class, educating health systems on strategic uses of third-party capital, and making investors aware of its benefits and advantages.
The healthcare real estate sector has subsequently seen dramatic growth and maturity, with investors strongly desiring to become involved in its development, and billions of dollars allocated to all types of medical facilities within the asset class.
In a subsequent interview with the industry magazine Healthcare Real Estate Insights (HREI), Ms. Wong-Hammond noted that Mr. Winer was a “pioneer” in promoting investment in the sector, and is a big part of the reason many investors now view healthcare real estate as a core asset.
“John was making transactions happen well before any funds or many investors were allocating capital for MOBs,” she said.
“I was attending the luncheon at the BOMA healthcare conference and had no idea I would be receiving an award,” Mr. Winer says. “I was certainly very surprised, very pleased and very humbled by it.”
