From one hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D., in 2004, Sanford has grown to become the nation’s largest rural, not-for-profit provider, with locations in 126 communities in eight states. Fueled by credit card mogul T. Denny Sanford’s nearly $700 million in gifts, the system now boasts 35 medical centers and 140 clinics. With dual headquarters in Sioux Falls and Fargo, N.D., it has long been anticipated that Sanford Health would someday acquire or merge with a health system in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, the nearest large metro area in the Upper Midwest.
