Iredell Health System officially broke ground on its Mooresville expansion Friday morning, celebrating the future of its healthcare services in the community.
The 17.2-acre property, located near the corner of Bluefield Road and Highway 150, will have multiple buildings serving various purposes, eventually totaling 200,000 square feet. The first phase of the project will be a 68,000 square foot building that will be home to a 24-hour urgent care center — the only 24-hour healthcare facility in the area outside of a hospital emergency room — and an ambulatory surgery center, the first of its kind in Mooresville. It will also include a state-of-the-art diagnostic imaging center with CT, ultrasound, 3D mammography and x-ray. The new space will also house Iredell Occupational Medicine, Iredell Rehab at Mooresville, and other physician practices. Construction on the first phase is estimated to be completed by June 2021.
During Friday’s ceremony, Iredell’s President & CEO John Green explained that this project aligns with the nonprofit Health System’s original charter, first established with the opening of Iredell Memorial Hospital in the 1950s.
“Our organization was originally created by the people of Iredell County, for the people of Iredell County for their health and wellness needs,” he said. “With the prolific growth in the Mooresville/South Iredell area, it was beholden on us to have more services available for citizens in this part of our county. It’s exciting to know that we still have an additional two-thirds of this campus available for other ventures. We recognize that healthcare will continue to evolve and our job will be to determine the community’s needs with respect to the future of healthcare and provide those services for them. Our mission to inspire wellbeing – together will continue for many years to come.”
Green also referred to various “shop local” campaigns that encourage consumers to buy, shop, dine, eat and stay locally instead of going out of the county for services they need. Keeping healthcare local is also important, he said, emphasizing that funds brought in through Iredell Health System are always put right back into the community for the benefit of the people who live and work here.
“Our patients are telling us they prefer not to travel to us to get the care they need and deserve. We’ve been listening,” Green said when the land acquisition was first announced. “This new property will allow us to continue to expand on our services already offered in the Mooresville area, while adding new and other innovative service lines as well.”
“I firmly believe that this project will become the benchmark for future outpatient facilities in this region and across the U.S.,” said Alan Jenkins, Healthcare Development Partner at The Keith Corporation, during his remarks at Friday’s ceremony.
More than 130 individuals attended Friday’s ceremony, including Sen. Vickie Sawyer, Rep. John Fraley, and Rep. Jeff McNeely; Town of Mooresville Commissioners Lisa Qualls, Thurman Houston and Barbara Whittington; and Iredell County Board of Commissioner Gene Houpe. Also in attendance were Mooresville Mayor Miles Atkins; Mooresville Town Manager Randy Hemann; Mooresville Assistant Town Manager Ryan Rase; Mooresville Police Chief Ron Campurciani; Mooresville Assistant Police Chiefs Frank Falzone, Joe Cook and Eric Henderson; Mooresville Chamber of Commerce President Kirk Ballard; Statesville Chamber of Commerce President & CEO Shannon Viera; Iredell County Economic Development Corporation President & CEO Jenn Bosser; and Iredell Health System’s Board of Directors and Board of Trustees.
Jenkins also took a moment Friday to introduce the project delivery team who will play integral roles in the construction and further development of the 17.2-acre site. That includes civil engineering by Oak Engineering, architect The Beck Group, general contractor Choate Construction, and Jenkins’s business partner, Patrick Faulkner of The Keith Corporation.
Iredell Health System has grown significantly in the past few years, becoming the largest healthcare entity in Iredell County. That expansion includes reaching beyond Iredell to surrounding counties. The Health System now has more than 20 clinics and practices, as well as Iredell Memorial Hospital.
