Colliers International | Commissioning & Energy Services Wins Commissioning Award For The NewYork-Presbyterian David H. Koch Center

NEW YORK, NY— May 29, 2019Colliers International Commissioning & Energy Services is pleased to announce that it recently won the Building Commissioning Association (BCxA) Northeast Chapter’s 2018 Project Award for New Construction for its work on the state-of-the-art NewYork-Presbyterian David H. Koch Center. Colliers provided comprehensive commissioning services on the new, 740,000-square-foot ambulatory care facility that opened in April 2018.

Under the leadership and direction of NewYork-Presbyterian’s Facilities team, Colliers provided integrated commissioning of the mechanical, electrical, plumbing and building envelope in accordance with LEED for Healthcare, the Facility Guidelines Institute’s Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospitals and NewYork-Presbyterian’s own rigorous standards. During the design phase, Colliers developed the owner’s project requirements, represented Facilities and Operations in meetings, reviewed the design for compliance with NewYork-Presbyterian’s operational objectives and standards and provided detailed commissioning specifications.

Once construction was underway, Colliers reviewed the shop drawings for access and maintenance requirements, field-verified the installation, developed detailed functional performance tests of the commissioned systems and equipment and led the year-long testing effort. Colliers also assisted in training the hospital facilities personnel, so they were ready to operate the building at turnover.

“We were incredibly honored to have been chosen to deliver this invaluable addition to NewYork-Presbyterian’s renowned hospital services,” said AJ Kindya, the New York City Regional Director for the Commissioning & Energy Services team and Colliers’ senior leader who worked with NewYork-Presbyterian. “The award from BCxA is a true capstone to a world-class commissioning project for us and we are grateful to the Hospital for our part in delivering the NewYork-Presbyterian David H. Koch Center.”

The NYP David H. Koch Center serves as a one-stop destination for individualized, coordinated care from diagnosis to treatment. Multidisciplinary teams of physicians work collaboratively to consider each patient holistically, whether they are being treated for digestive diseases, cancer or other conditions, or coming for outpatient surgery, interventional radiology or diagnostic imaging. The center includes 12 state-of-the-art operating rooms, 11 endoscopic procedure rooms, MRI and CT imaging, radiation therapy, gastrointestinal services and an infusion center. Support areas, such as a full-service sterilization center, are located proximate to the surgical suite to provide efficient turnaround times of the operating rooms. To enhance patient services, all imaging and radiation therapy equipment is located on the building’s upper floors, negating the need for patients to travel to lower floors where this extremely heavy equipment is typically located. Mechanical systems include chillers, generators, air handling units, electrical substations and primary high-tension electric service.

In July 2020, the top five-and-a-half floors of the building, currently under construction, will be occupied by the NewYork-Presbyterian Alexandra Cohen Hospital for Women and Newborns, a 220,000-square-foot facility that will feature 75 private patient rooms and well-baby nurseries, 60 private neonatal intensive care (NICU) bassinets, as well as 16 labor and delivery rooms. The labor and delivery 14th floor will have four C-section operating rooms and a full service OR. In addition to 60 bassinets on the 15th floor NICU, there is a full service OR with fluoroscopy and an adjoining MRI.

The advanced and complex design of the NYP David H. Koch Center and the NYP Alexandra Cohen Hospital for Women and Newborns requires an intensive and well-planned commissioning process with input and guidance from all team members.
