News Release: Animas Surgical Hospital Breaks Ground on Expansion

Animas Surgical Hospital staff break ground on the new expansion on November 16, 2018.

A new chapter in the history of Animas Surgical Hospital began on November 17, 2018, with the official groundbreaking for their new $31 million Medical Office Building and Surgical Center.  The new three-story, 73,125-square-foot building will contain medical offices, an outpatient surgical center, and a retail pharmacy.  The new building is located next to and will operate seamlessly with Animas Surgical Hospital’s current facility.  Construction is expected to be completed in early 2020.

“Our new expansion uniquely positions Animas Surgical Hospital to meet the ever-growing healthcare needs in our community. With our new, state-of-the-art facility, we will continue to provide innovative and personalized care for individuals across the Four Corners region and will continue to serve as a regional hub for surgical care,” said Wendy Bitner, CEO.

The new Medical Office Building and Surgical Center is centered around patient care. The facility will feature extensive natural lighting, ample space for family members to gather, and an expansive two-story garage with 328 new parking spaces.  The facility also incorporates some of the latest in green technology to reduce the hospital’s environmental impact.  In addition, the building will contain space for additional leased medical offices and a retail pharmacy. Animas Surgical Hospital is developing the state-of-the-art facility in collaboration with a team of professionals, including Goodwyn Mills and Cawood, Inc. (architect), Brasfield & Gorrie (general contractor), and Capital Growth Medvest (real estate owner and developer).

“Since our current facility opened in 2004, we have been operating at or near capacity.  Expanding our services will help ensure that our patients and their families have access to the specialized medical care they need – right here in Durango.  This groundbreaking would not be possible without the collective efforts of many people, including our local government, our physician owners, and our surrounding community.  We are so grateful for the overwhelming support from the community over the past 18 years,” said Bitner.  “During the expansion, Animas Surgical Hospital will remain committed to our top priorities, which include exceptional patient care, convenient scheduling, and world-class surgical services.”
