Finalist in the “Post-Acute & Senior Living Facilities Best New Ground-Up Development” Category

Birmingham, Ala. – The Sanders Trust, a Birmingham-based healthcare real estate and development firm, has been named as a finalist in the 2018 Healthcare Real Estate Insights (“HREI”) Awards for their Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital project in Des Moines, IA in the “Post-Acute & Senior Living Facilities Best New Ground-Up Development” category. Finalists will be featured in the December 2018 edition of HREI magazine and winners will be announced at noon on Thursday, December 6.

Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital is Iowa’s first and only freestanding rehabilitation hospital. The Sanders Trust worked with contractor J.E. Dunn and the ESa architecture firm to complete the project. The hospital provides care for patients recovering from stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation and other conditions. Patients in need of intensive rehabilitation services have the opportunity to receive care locally, where their family members and caregivers are encouraged to be part of the recovery process.

“The Sanders Trust is honored to be recognized by HREI for our Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital project in Des Moines,” stated Rance M. Sanders, President and CEO of The Sanders Trust. “This recognition is a testament to our team’s dedication to Mercy Rehabilitation Center and adds significant additional value to one of our largest projects.”

The two-story, 58,000-square-foot, $21 million facility features 50 patient beds, along with gymnasiums equipped with high-tech therapy devices and treatments including a Smart Car for transfer therapy, Ekso Bionic Exoskeleton suit, and a Bioness Integrated Therapy System (BITS). Patients have access to an apartment setting where they are able to practice daily living tasks and utilize community re-entry programs to help ease the transition to home. The facility also includes an outdoor therapy courtyard with several therapy stations including transitional surfaces, a putting green, a basketball goal and walking paths.

A dedicated brain injury unit is complete with monitored rooms, specialized beds, patient lifting equipment and separate therapy and dining spaces. The hospital also has a unit exclusively for stroke patients, rooms specially equipped for bariatric patients, and private, family-friendly rooms with sleeper chairs.
