Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital is Iowa’s First free-standing Rehabilitation Hospital

The Sanders Trust, one of the nation’s leading healthcare real estate investment companies, is pleased to announce the grand opening of Iowa’s first and only freestanding rehabilitation hospital, Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa. The Sanders Trust was selected to be the developer/owner of the facility which is operated by a joint venture between Mercy Medical Center–Des Moines and Kindred Healthcare. A formal ribbon-cutting ceremony was held on June 7th to signify the grand opening of the hospital.

Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital will provide care for patients recovering from stroke, traumatic brain injury, spinal cord injury, amputation and other conditions. Patients in need of intensive rehabilitation services will have the opportunity to receive care locally, where their family members and caregivers are encouraged to be part of the recovery process.

“On behalf of The Sanders Trust team, we are very excited to announce the grand opening of Iowa’s first free-standing rehabilitation hospital,” stated Rance M. Sanders, President and CEO of The Sanders Trust. “Mercy Rehabilitation Hospital, located in Des Moines, will provide state-of-the-art technology and treatment for patients needing comprehensive rehabilitation. Our team is extremely proud to have worked with Mercy and Kindred on this special project.”

The two-story, 58,000-square-foot, $21 million facility features 50 patient beds, along with gymnasiums equipped with high-tech therapy devices and treatments including a Smart Car for transfer therapy, Ekso Bionic Exoskeleton suit, and a Bioness Integrated Therapy System (BITS). Patients will have access to an apartment setting where they can practice daily living tasks and utilize community re-entry programs to help ease the transition to home. The facility also includes an outdoor therapy courtyard with several therapy stations including transitional surfaces, a putting green, a basketball goal and walking paths.

A dedicated brain injury unit is complete with monitored rooms, specialized beds, patient lifting equipment and separate therapy and dining spaces. The hospital will also have a unit exclusively for stroke patients, rooms specially equipped for bariatric patients, and private, family-friendly rooms with sleeper chairs.
