Oct. 5, 2017 — Novant Health unveiled the completion of its new three-story, 89,000-square-foot facility tower to its existing Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital on Thursday. The nearly 46-year-old facility, located at 1901 Randolph Road at the corner of Fifth Street and Caswell Road, is the region’s only hospital dedicated entirely to orthopedics and spine and is one of a few of its kind in the nation.

“Novant Health Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital has a long history of providing innovative, world-class orthopedic care for residents of Charlotte and surrounding communities,” said Jason Bernd, vice president of Novant Health Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital. “This new state-of-the-art facility tower continues this tradition by allowing us to upgrade our facilities to mirror the caliber of specialized care our staff and physicians provide.”

With the completion of the tower, Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital now has 48 patient beds. Additionally, the new facility tower houses seven leading-edge operating rooms, a rehabilitation gym, a pre-surgical wellness unit and a new sterile processing department.

“This incredible orthopedic facility was designed to advance patient-centered model of care in the safest manner possible,” said Michele Gobble, director of nursing for Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital. “The building incorporates features for quality and safety such as UV lights in the air duct system, antimicrobial paint throughout the facility, and silver-infused hardware to destroy bacteria and microorganisms that could cause infections.”

Amenities for patients and guests include valet parking, Starbucks kiosk, free Wi-Fi, comfortable waiting rooms for family and friends, wide doors and hallways for wheelchairs and walkers, and spacious, private patient rooms that include a sleeper sofa for an overnight guest.

Because of its skill and dedication to orthopedics, Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital is ranked among the top hospitals in the country for surgical care and orthopedic programs. The orthopedic surgeons utilize the latest surgical techniques including robotic-based technology in spine and joint replacement. The radiologists use the most sophisticated technology, such as 3-D imaging, to diagnose conditions.

Originally developed as an extended care facility in 1971, the building transformed into a dedicated orthopedic hospital in 1976. Today, Novant Health Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital offers care and services in the areas of total joint replacement, spine surgery, foot and ankle surgery, shoulder and elbow surgery, hand and wrist surgery and sports medicine. The surgeons, who include physician partners at both Novant Health Orthopedics and Sports Medicine and OrthoCarolina, are board-certified and specialty or fellowship trained in orthopedic surgery and are supported by a care team with advanced training in orthopedics.

The hospital has earned some of the nation’s top honors in quality care, including The Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval for Advanced Certification for five of its joint and spine programs: total knee replacement, total hip replacement, hip fracture, spinal laminectomy and spinal fusion. It has been named in Becker’s Hospital Review as one of the nation’s “Top 100 Orthopedic Hospitals” in 2015 and 2016, and ranked by CareChex as No. 33 in the county for medical excellence for orthopedic surgery in 2017.

The facility tower is the first phase of a total renovation for the hospital. The second phase will include renovating 85,000-square-feet of existing space for a new outpatient surgery center to open in August 2018. The renovation of the entire hospital is scheduled to be completed in late 2018. Vannoy Construction is the general contractor and Wright McGraw Beyer Architects is behind the design.

In 2016, Charlotte Orthopedic Hospital performed 7,481 surgical cases. The hospital employs 300 care team members. The first surgery in the new facility will take place October 16.
