Mur01-13Musings on a half-decade of living with the PPACA

Dear Reader:

As I write these words, it is almost four years to the day since the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) was signed into law: March 23, 2010. If you factor in about one year of Congressional debate prior to the passage of the bill, it is fair to say we have been living under the threat – or some would say the opportunity – of the PPACA for at least a half-decade.

The issue was politically polarizing five years ago and it remains so today. Whether you call it the PPACA, the ACA for short, Obamacare or just plain old healthcare reform, the 2,000-plus page federal statute is still viewed as historic by some and hysterical by others. The online exchanges are a smashing success or an unmitigated disaster. Of course, the reality lies somewhere in between.
